Home Improvement - by Beverly Burns

Home improvements often means construction, dust and debris, paint fumes or new air conditioning or heating equipment to be installed.

Sheetrock work, wood sanding and wood floor refinishing create large amounts of dust and debris which can be recirculated through the ventilation system after construction projects. Clean the air conditioning system after construction to rid the house of this source of indoor air pollution.

Installing a new A/C or heating system? After construction and before the new systems are turned on is the best time to clean the ductwork. You don’t want to circulate mold, mildew, construction dust and debris into your newly installed equipment. So, clean your ductwork, grills, and registers before placing the new equipment into service.

Had a roof leak that has wet the ductwork? Moisture can cause mold and fungus growth.  If the A/C systems seems to be producing an unpleasant odor or you see black growth on a resister or on the wall or ceiling around a register, you probably are seeing mold.

According to the American Lung Association, we spend about 90 percent of our time indoors.  Out of the 90 percent, 65 percent is spent at home.  Americans are spending more for home improvements every year.  Our homes provide us a place to relax and enjoy our leisure time, to entertain and be with family and friends.  Home shows are packed with people looking for ways to enhance the quality of their home environment.  Indoor air quality is a major component of a quality home environment.

If your customers home is making them sick, or causing them to spend too much time cleaning, you should solve their problem.

The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) provides information on air duct cleaning as a means of remediation indoor air pollution.  Members of NADCA agree to clean to the NADCA standards and abide by the NADCA code of ethics.  They must maintain any certifications and/or licenses required b y their state.  All member companies are required to have a NADCA certified Air System Cleaning Specialist (ASCS) on staff.
