What
Exactly is Marketing? - author unknown
If you answered “sales”, you would be only
partially right! Actually, sales is just one component of marketing.
But let me explain further, using a little imagery:
- If the circus is coming to town and you
paint a sign saying, “Circus is coming to the Fairgrounds
Sunday,” that’s Advertising.
- If you put the sign on the back of an
elephant and walk him through town, that’s
Promotion.
- If the elephant convinces people in
town to attend the circus, that's Sales.
- If the elephant walks through the
mayor's flowerbed, that's Publicity.
If you can get the mayor to laugh about it,
that's Public Relations.
And if you planned the whole thing, that's
MARKETING!
Once you're aware that marketing is an
umbrella encompassing several elements for the purpose of getting
someone to use your product or service, you'll want to incorporate
all of its elements into your marketing plan.
